Real-Time Measurement Disclaimer

Real-Time DNS Measurements

If you're a DNS operator encountering problems with our DNS measurements, here's what you need to know:

Contact Information

If you're a DNS operator and suspect that our tests are causing issues with your authoritative name servers, please read on to learn what to expect from us, how to reach out to us, and, as a last resort, how to block our traffic.

We value your cooperation in resolving problems and offer our apologies if our measurements unintentionally lead to difficulties.

What to Expect as a DNS Operator

Forward DNS Measurements

  • As a DNS operator, here's what you can anticipate from our measurement system:
    • Within the first 48 hours after creating domain names, you will receive 3 queries every five minutes for each domain you manage.
    • For each domain with an issued certificate, you'll receive 1 query per nameserver.
  • Generally, our measurements will only be noticeable in statistics if you run a very busy nameserver with a high number of domains.

Dealing with Measurement Impact

If you're a DNS operator and believe our measurements are negatively affecting your system, please continue reading.

Important Note: Our traffic originates from the following IPv4 addresses: 192.87.174.8-23. This information may be useful if you decide to block our traffic (details below).

What to Do if Our Measurement Affects Your Infrastructure

We are committed to responsible network measurement practices to minimize the impact on DNS servers. However, we cannot determine if our measurements adversely affect your infrastructure as a DNS operator. Therefore, if you believe our measurements are causing issues for your infrastructure, please contact us so that we can work to resolve the problem. We prefer to include the domains you manage in our measurements, if possible, without causing disruptions.

When reaching out to us, please provide the following information to r[dot]sommese[at]utwente[dot]nl:

  1. Your organization's name and a point of contact (email and, if possible, a phone number).
  2. The DNS hostname(s) of the affected nameservers.
  3. A description of the impact, including details such as the number of queries per second and their effects.
  4. The date and time when you first noticed problems that may be related to our measurements.
  5. The IP address(es) or blocks from which you're receiving problematic traffic.

Blocking Our Traffic

If you determine that it is necessary to block our traffic, we kindly request that you contact us about it so we can still exclude you from our measurements.
